Broadcast Flag

The courts will hear arguments tomorrow about the Broadcast Flag -- a scheme that will force all manufacturers of all multimedia hardware to check for the existence of a mark that signals whether it's OK to copy. It would, for example, allow the broadcaster to determine whether you could record a show on your new VCR or Tivo.

Allowing the movie studios to legislate how technology develops is mind-numbingly stupid. Alas, it seems to be virtually a done deal. And we can't blame this one on Bush; the Democrats may be even more keen on this atrocity than the Republicans.
