Care Bears
Mira fell in love with Care Bears when she saw a
couple of the cute little buggers in a Walgreen's while shopping for a birthday
present for one of her first-grade classmates, and on her own birthday a couple
of weeks ago, several more showed up at the
house.
Having a healthy start on a
collection, she wanted even more, so I started looking at them on the web. At
first I thought they were just another lame, overmarketed toy, but when I saw
their names -- the innocuous Bedtime Bear and Funshine Bear, the oh-so-giftable
Good Luck Bear and Birthday Bear, and the slightly bizarre Do Your Best Bear and
Wish Bear -- I became disturbed. Their pastel grins began to make me feel
dirty. How can we stand to live in a world where atrocities like this can
happen? God will punish us!
