Pillbug Races

Lyra Meadow (5) was hunched over the sidewalk, babbling to herself. Turns out she had drawn a racing stripe, and was now trying to teach a pillbug (aka "Roly Poly" -- which sure looks spelled wrong to me) to make its way to the finish line. It kept wandering off track, so she would say, "No, no, follow the line!" Then she'd nudge it back on course.

Naturally, this would startle the little critter, and it would roll up into a ball, halting the race. We were amused, but not enough to watch this painful process, so we stopped watching after a bit.

Eventually, she finished with the bug, and came over to join us.

"Did your pillbug finish the race?"

"Sort of. I had to carry him over the finish line."
