Piano
This house here at Three Meadows came with a
piano. Even at first I thought it was beautiful, though it was sitting at a
crazy angle because the floor where it was had rotted and slightly collapsed.
It was not in good condition, with dings and dents, horribly out of tune, and
several broken strings and hammers.
A
little research showed that it was made in
1889.
You'd think that an 1889 piano
would be worth something. I've seen Antiques Roadshow. Old stuff can be
pricey! I've seen piano benches that age command thousands of
dollars.
Alas, turns out it's worth so
little it's not even worth moving across town. A piano repair guy gave me an
estimate for bringing it back to pristine condition:
$6,000.
Not gonna
happen.
We did pay to have the broken
strings and hammers replaced, and have it tuned as best as it would go. It's
not a beautiful sounding piano now, but it's perfect for the kids to pound on,
and Mary sure makes it sound great.
