Joe's Favorite Horror Movies
The creme de la
creme:
Braindead (1992) (known in the States as
Dead
Alive. Directed by Peter Jackson, of
Lord of the
Rings
fame.) Jaws
(1975) Re-Animator
(1985) The Silence of the
Lambs (1991)Other excellent
horror flicks: An American Werewolf in
London (1981) Army of Darkness
(1993) Bubba Ho-tep
(2002) Creepshow
(1982) Cube
(1997) Dolls
(1987) Evil Dead II
(1987) Gremlins
(1984) The Hidden
(1987) Jurassic Park
(1993) Little Shop of Horrors
(1986) Misery
(1990) Near Dark
(1987) The Others
(2001) Poltergeist
(1982) Psycho
(1960) Psycho Beach Party
(2000) Scream
(1996) Shaun of the Dead
(2004) Tremors
(1990) Vampire's Kiss
(1989)A few of those I'm a bit
suspicious about. I rated them a decade ago, and I might well have been overly
generous. In particular, I'm thinking of
Dolls
and
Creepshow,
neither of which I've seen in 20
years.One horror flick that generally
receives rave reviews is The
Shining, by Stanley Kubrick. I never cared
for it. While there's some beautiful cinematography, the casting is a disaster
-- the kid can't act, Shelley Duvall is way out of place, and Jack Nicholson
looks so crazy in the opening scene that his descent into madness is
short-circuited before it can start. Bleah.
Alien
and
Aliens
are also usually on folks' list, but they miss for me, though not as badly as
The
Shining.And
yes,
Jaws
is a horror film. More than that, it's a monster movie.
