Joe's Favorites from 2005
I'm woefully behind on movie-watching. I went to
the theatre more in Hong Kong -- which probably has something to do with it
being much cheaper there.
My favorite
film of the year was Sin City. This flick out-noirs the noirest noirs, and does
it with incredible flair. It's outrageously violent and brutal, and certainly
not for everybody. Not as approachable as, say, a gay cowboy
movie.
I also liked King Kong (for the
sheer spectacle), The Aristocrats (for making me laugh so hard I almost fell out
of my seat), and Serenity (because it was a blast to see the Firefly folks on
the big screen).
Down in the next tier
down: The Weather Man, Land of the Dead, Coach Carter, Assault on Precinct 13,
The 40 Year Old Virgin, A History of Violence, The Hitchhiker's Guide to the
Galaxy, March of the Penguins, The Matador, and Red
Eye.
My worst movie of the year was
Alone in the Dark. I have no idea why anybody would ever let Uwe Boll direct a
film again -- he also did House of the Dead, my worst movie from 2003. And
BloodRayne, which looked of the same caliber -- but you're not luring me into
that theatre!
