The Election
I know the polls say the election is going to be
extremely close, or that Bush has a meaningful lead, but I have a theory that
the polls are wrong, and that Kerry will win
easily.
Here's my
logic:
I think we can all agree that
the last election was close. It was so close, in fact, that four years later,
we're _still_ not sure exactly who
won.
Now we've had Bush for four years,
and folks have gotten to know him a bit
better.
It is difficult for me to
imagine a voter who voted against Bush in 2000, but who has been won over by his
performance as President. On the other hand, I personally know many folks who
voted for him in 2000 who are voting against him now -- many voting for a
Democrat for the first time in their lives. These are the true conservatives
who believe that fiscal policy should be, well, _conservative. And that foreign
policy should be as non-interventionist as possible. And that government
shouldn't try to mislead and control its
citizens.
I voted against Bush in 2000,
but not enthusiastically. When he won, I shrugged and assumed he'd be a low-IQ
version of his dad, which wasn't so
bad.
I was wrong. He's a low-IQ
version of _somebody,_ but it sure ain't George
Sr.
Lest anybody think I'm partisan,
for the most part I think the Democratic Party is just as lame as the
Republicans -- often more so.
The
current Republican coalition, however, isn't the stolid old business guys that
they used to be. They have three major
groups:
The very
rich
The very
Christian
Rednecks
These
groups wouldn't seem to have a lot to do with each other, but that's the current
Republican Party. And miraculously, George W. Bush is the perfect front man for
this assembly. He's a rich, religious redneck -- or at least that's how his
handlers present him. Genius.
Please,
get out the vote. Kicking Bush out of office will go a long way toward
re-establishing America as a moral world citizen, especially if we do it
convincingly.
