Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger
I just installed Tiger. I had inexplicable
trouble the first time I rebooted after installing -- I got the grey startup
screen with a spinning clock thingie, but it got no further. I knew that there
was this new Spotlight search technology, and I'd heard that the first time you
booted it could be extremely slow, because the Mac is creating an index. So I
left it running overnight, but when it still wasn't done, I figured there was a
problem.
After much painful flailing, I
decided to do a semi-clean install, instead of just an update. Unfortunately,
my 80 gig hard drive is almost full, and there wasn't enough room to fit the new
System. I had to boot into unix console mode and type archaic commands to free
enough space. Once I finally did this, fortunately, I got installed
OK.
My iTunes had all its text in
Hebrew, which turns out to be related to a problem with the Lucida Grande font.
Disabling that font fixed it.
Weird.
If Apple really wanted us to
upgrade, they'd make each new OS come with a kick-ass game that only ran on that
version. The puzzle desk accessory widget just doesn't cut it.
